He International Olympic Committee (IOC) will vote next month on the creation of the Olympic Games of Esportswhich the organization hopes will become the pinnacle of achievement for gamers around the world, the president said Friday Thomas Bach.
“With the creation of the Esports Olympic Games, the IOC takes a big step forward and keeps pace with the digital revolution”Bach said at a press conference.
“We are very pleased by the enthusiasm with which the Esports community represented in our Esports Commission has committed to this initiative. It is further proof of the attractiveness of the Olympic brand and the values it represents.”
The IOC executive board’s proposal will be voted on at its Paris Olympics session next month, and a possible venue is already being studied.
Bach explained that a new structure would be created within the IOC, but that it would be completely independent of the organizational and financial model of the traditional Olympic Games.
The IOC has been trying for years to connect with a younger generation of potential Olympic fans, as its traditional audience base gradually ages.
