Bundesliga: Coach Rose extends his contract at RB Leipzig for just one year

RB Leipzig can now go into the next player talks with an important personnel matter. Nevertheless, the duration of the contract is surprising.

Marco Rose has extended his contract with RB Leipzig until June 30, 2026. Although the coach has recorded 53 wins in 86 competitive matches since taking office in September 2022 and achieved the best points average of 2.01 of all RB’s Bundesliga coaches, he only signed for one more season. His original contract was dated until summer 2025 anyway.

“Since I was allowed to start at RB Leipzig, we have defended the DFB Cup together and won the Supercup. The club is working in the background to ensure that we put together a strong team again. We feel that more is possible and we always want more,” said Rose in a club statement.

“We have celebrated many successes together over the last two years, won titles and qualified for the Champions League. Marco has played a decisive role in this and we would like to continue to tackle our ambitious goals with him in the future,” said RB managing director Johann Plenge.

Sporting director Rouven Schröder, who will soon have a new boss in Marcel Schäfer as sporting director, was relieved in the midst of the season planning: “Having clarity on the coaching question at this point also helps us with regard to other important personnel matters.”

Rose did not want a new XXL upheaval

The 47-year-old Rose was linked with AC Milan weeks ago. He did not want to comment on it. But he feels “very comfortable and, if the other side wants it, I’d be happy to be here next year.” The Leipzig native also called for clarity in personnel planning. He wanted to avoid another XXL shake-up like before the last season with four key players. For what Leipzig is still missing, “you need continuity,” Rose said a few weeks ago. Rose came to Leipzig in September 2022 as Domenico Tedesco’s successor and won the DFB Cup in his first season.
