Formula 1 record world champion Lewis Hamilton has grabbed the best time of the day at the start of the Grand Prix weekend in Spain.
The 39-year-old Mercedes driver narrowly beat local hero Carlos Sainz (+0.022 seconds) in his Ferrari to second place in 1:13.264 minutes at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Third place in the second practice session went to McLaren man Lando Norris (+0.055 seconds), who had set the first best time of the day.
After sitting out the first practice session in favor of young driver Oliver Bearman, Nico Hülkenberg in the Haas later finished twelfth. World champion Max Verstappen finished second in the first session in Barcelona, and the Red Bull driver finished fifth in the afternoon.
This weekend, Formula 1 will contest the 1111th Grand Prix in its history. Verstappen leads the World Championship after six victories in the first new races. He already has 56 points more than second-placed Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. Verstappen is aiming for his third consecutive victory in Spain this Sunday (3 p.m./Sky).
