The German national football team has secured group victory at the European Championships. The selection of national coach Julian Nagelsmann played 1:1 (0:1) against Switzerland in Frankfurt. The individual players in review:
Neuer: The European record goalkeeper had no chance to defend the second goal conceded in the tournament. Augsburg’s Vargas scored from an offside position (85th minute). Strong save from Xhaka’s shot (88th minute).
Kimmich: Before the 0-1 he was unable to stop the Swiss attack sufficiently. After the break he marched forward tirelessly. Akanji blocked his shot with his left foot (71′).
Rüdiger: The defense chief had considerable problems with goalscorer Ndoye. After a lost challenge, the score was almost 0-2. He also missed a good header opportunity (41′).
Tah: His duels with Embolo were a real smash. The Leverkusen player was shown a yellow card after one of them and is now banned from the round of 16. He also managed to get past the goalscorer Ndoye in the 0-1 defeat.
Mittelstädt: A lot of forward play came down his left side, but not enough came out. The Stuttgart player crossed too hastily, too imprecisely. Raum came in for him after an hour.
Andrich: The Leverkusen player’s first international goal was disallowed by the video referee because of Musiala’s foul on Aebischer (17′). He often defended very deep and won a number of balls.
Kroos: The strategist had trouble controlling the German game. Rieder often disturbed him. Shot wide from a good position (55th minute). His free kicks and corners mostly fizzled out.
Musiala: He had a particularly hard time with his dribbling and turning on the soapy grass. He lost the ball before the 0-1. He tested Sommer with a powerful shot (50′).
Gündogan: Played well at the start, but then couldn’t find the space up front. The captain moved further back in the second half. Couldn’t turn the game around there either.
Wirtz: The young Leverkusen player is hanging on. He only had some good moves after the break. A strong outside-of-the-foot pass to Musiala (50th minute) also gave Kimmich a chance to score (71st minute).
Havertz: As a centre-forward, he often had the ball. He had a tough time against Akanji in the penalty area. Not effective enough. Early header chance, one shot too high.
Schlotterbeck: The Dortmund player came on for Tah – a hint for the round of 16. Solved his defensive tasks calmly.
Space: The Leipzig player made his European Championship debut. He shot from distance (63′). He showed his crossing ability with a super sharp ball to Füllkrug, making it 1:1.
Beier: With his speed, the Hoffenheim player was able to liven up the offense now and again. He fell to the ground in a duel with Widmer in the penalty area, but there was no penalty.
Sané: The Bayern star is still waiting for the big moment at the European Championships when he comes on as a substitute. He missed the target with a volley from a corner with his left foot (82′).
Füllkrug: The Dortmund player waited for the cross after being substituted – and in injury time it came from Raum. Header, goal, the Frankfurt stadium was on its head.
