Hungary can dream of reaching the round of 16, but is worried about striker Varga. For Scotland, the European Championship is over after the 0-1 defeat.
Thanks to substitute Kevin Csoboth, the Hungarian national football team is dreaming of progressing to the European Championship. The 1-0 win against Scotland on Sunday, achieved late in injury time, was briefly overshadowed by a medical intervention, as a result of which Barnabás Varga had to be transported out of the stadium under a screen.
The Hungarian striker was conscious, Hungarian television station M4 reported after the final whistle, citing voices from the substitutes’ bench.
Freiburg’s Roland Sallai reported to M4 that Varga was feeling better and that he hoped he would recover and return to the team. Varga had fallen in the fray in the penalty area after a free kick cross and remained motionless on the pitch. M4 later said that Vargas was in a stable condition.
Coach Marco Rossi’s team climbed to third place in Group A. The “Bravehearts”, on the other hand, failed again in the group phase. They have never made it to the knockout phase of a European Championship before.
Csoboth fails at the post
The Hungarians, who competed in Stuttgart in front of 54,000 spectators with plenty of Bundesliga power, collected three points, while Scotland has one point. As in the 2016 and 2021 tournaments, the best two teams in each of the six preliminary groups and the four best third-placed teams will qualify for the knockout phase. Hungary can still hope for this scenario.
The Hungarians had the best chances before scoring the winning goal. The advanced defender Willi Orbán from RB Leipzig headed a free kick from his former team-mate Dominik Szobozslai onto the crossbar after 41 minutes and Csoboth failed to score on the post (90th +2). Eight minutes later he converted a counterattack to secure the important victory.
