Competition for cockpit: Contract for Gasly: Schumacher’s Formula 1 chances dwindle

Mick Schumacher is working on his return to Formula 1. Next week he will test the Alpine racing car. However, the French team has now secured another driver.

Mick Schumacher’s chances of returning to Formula 1 have dwindled somewhat. The French Alpine team, for which Schumacher is currently competing in the World Endurance Championship, announced on the sidelines of the Austrian Grand Prix that it had extended the contract of current regular driver Pierre Gasly (28) for several years.

This means that only one seat is left for the coming season at the former Renault racing team. Recently it was unclear whether Gasly would stay and there might even be two vacancies.

Schumacher definitely wants to return

Alpine had previously announced the separation from Gasly’s French compatriot Esteban Ocon at the end of the season, creating room for speculation about his successor. The favorite for the position is currently said to be Australian Jack Doohan. Next Wednesday, the 21-year-old Doohan and Schumacher (25) will test in an old Alpine racing car from 2022 in Silverstone, England. As the specialist portal motorsport-magazin.com reports, the two-part test day will probably also be about the second permanent seat for next year.

The current Formula 2 driver Doohan and Schumacher are good friends – just like their fathers. Motorcycle legend Mick Doohan is considered one of the best friends of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher.

Alpine team boss Bruno Famin had confirmed that Mick Schumacher is one of the candidates for a contract. Schumacher last competed for Alpine in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but dropped out after technical problems. Mick Schumacher’s big goal remains a comeback in Formula 1. After two years in the premier class of motorsport, he was not given a new contract with the US team Haas at the end of 2022. Schumacher is currently also a test and reserve driver for the Mercedes factory team.
