Last year, the Augsburg-born carpenter narrowly missed out on his first triumph on a stage of the world’s biggest race. He wants to change that this time.

After narrowly missing out on a stage win last year, professional cyclist Georg Zimmermann is hoping for success at the Tour de France this year. However, he is aware of the challenge. “Perhaps one or two opportunities will open up for me to win my first stage in the Tour. But everything has to come together on one day,” the 26-year-old told the German Press Agency before the start of the 111th edition of the three-week tour on Saturday in Florence. The first stage to Rimini is a real challenge with a total of 3,600 meters of elevation.

The Augsburg native is taking part in the Tour de France for the fourth time. “It would be a nice, great success – for which I would have invested a lot of hard work,” said Zimmermann. But he added: “But the world will keep turning even if I don’t take this stage win.” Zimmermann’s best career result was the stage victory at the Tour de Dauphiné in 2023.

Failed by a whisker in 2023

Hopes for the first German stage win since 2021 are pinned on the Bavarian, among others. Back then, Nils Politt triumphed on the twelfth stage in Nimes. Last year, sprinter Phil Bauhaus and Zimmermann each narrowly missed a black-red-gold day victory.

In 2023, Zimmermann narrowly failed on the tenth stage in Issoire. In the final sprint, he had to admit defeat to the Spaniard Pello Bilbao. He had ridden in too high a gear. That shouldn’t happen again to the mountain-savvy racer. Above all, he feels fit. “The preparation went perfectly, I got through without any complications. I feel ready,” Zimmermann clarified.
