On a rainy day at Wimbledon, Jan-Lennard Struff passed his second round test. The tennis pro from Sauerland has never performed better at the London Grand Slam tournament than he has this year.

Davis Cup player Jan-Lennard Struff is the first German tennis professional to reach the third round at Wimbledon. The Warsteiner defeated the Chinese Zhang Zhizhen 5:7, 6:3, 7:6 (7:1), 7:6 (10:8) in his second appearance this year at London’s Church Road.

The 34-year-old thus equalled his previous best result in the grass court classic from 2018 and 2019. In the fight for a place in the round of 16, Struff will face Russian world number five Daniil Medvedev, against whom he lost in his opening match at Wimbledon 2021.

Rain disrupts drainage

On a rainy day with numerous postponed and rescheduled matches, Struff had a weak phase on his own serve at an unfortunate time in the first set against the 32nd seeded Chinese player. He lost the game 5:6 and had to concede the first set.

After falling behind in a set and a rain break, the Sauerland player turned the game around against his opponent, who was receiving treatment in the meantime. In the fourth set, Struff was already one break ahead, but gave it back. In the tiebreak, he kept his nerve even when he had three set points against him.

Altmaier waits in vain

Before that, Jule Niemeier played her first round match, which had been postponed due to bad weather, and advanced with an unexpectedly clear 6:2, 6:1 win against the Swiss Viktorija Golubic.

Daniel Altmaier’s second-round match against Canadian Denis Shapovalov was cancelled this evening and is expected to be played on Thursday.
