An Italian duel thrilled the spectators at Wimbledon. French Open winner Alcaraz is also on course at Wimbledon.
Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner has passed the test against fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini in Wimbledon and has moved into the third round. The world number one prevailed in the exciting and entertaining duel against the 2021 Wimbledon finalist with 7:6 (7:3), 7:6 (7:4), 2:6, 7:6 (7:4).
“We are good friends, we play Davis Cup together, we sometimes train together. It is very hard that we meet in the second round,” said Sinner, who now plays against Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic.
The title contender had his first match point at 6:5, but only secured his place in the tiebreak. Sinner had fallen down the world rankings due to several injuries and was therefore not seeded. In the first round he defeated Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe in four sets.
Alcaraz confidently continues
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, remains undefeated after his successful second-round appearance at Wimbledon. The Spanish world number three beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7:6 (7:5), 6:2, 6:2 and thus made it into the third round. There, Alcaraz will face US professional Frances Tiafoe.
In the previous only encounter with Vukic, the Spaniard had come up short. However, the duel took place in the 2020 French Open qualification under very different circumstances. The then 17-year-old was still number 193 in the world, but he is now a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner. The 21-year-old recently won the French Open in the final against Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev.
