National coach Julian Nagelsmann has made a change for the match against Spain: Emre Can moves into the starting eleven for Robert Andrich. Leroy Sané starts for Florian Wirtz.
The German national football team will start the European Championship quarter-final against Spain with Leroy Sané and, surprisingly, Emre Can in the starting lineup. In the knockout match on Friday in Stuttgart, national coach Julian Nagelsmann is relying on Dortmund’s Can instead of the previously established Leverkusen player Robert Andrich in defensive midfield. As in the 2-0 win in the round of 16 against Denmark, Sané will once again be preferred in the offensive over young star Florian Wirtz, who will once again be on the bench.
Nagelsmann explained his changes to the “ARD Sportschau” with the sometimes leaky defense of the Spanish team: “There is a lot of space behind the defense line when counter-pressing and a certain vulnerability to counterattacks, Leroy is very, very good at that,” said the national coach. The change from Andrich to Can also has to do with the speed of the Dortmund captain: “Emre brings a lot of speed with him, so we have one more speed player on the pitch. His job will be to contain Fabian Ruiz, he has great speed advantages there, that will play a key role,” explained Nagelsmann.
Leroy Sané and David Raum back
Jonathan Tah returns to the centre of defence after his yellow card suspension. David Raum starts again as left defender and is expected to stop the 16-year-old Spanish young star Lamine Yamal. The DFB team is again led by captain Ilkay Gündogan. For 34-year-old Toni Kroos, if Germany is eliminated, it would be the last football game of his career. The Spanish team starts with the well-rehearsed top eleven without Leipzig’s Dani Olmo.
