Roger Federer needs to experience for himself that Alexander Zverev can play good tennis on grass. Now he sees a chance for the Hamburg native at the most important grass tennis tournament.
Former tennis star Roger Federer believes Olympic champion Alexander Zverev can pull off a Wimbledon coup. He believes “that he could win Wimbledon. Whether it will be this year or next year remains to be seen,” said the long-retired Swiss (42), who is a visitor to Wimbledon, in an interview with “Prime Video”. It is important for Zverev to “believe in himself.”
It is “important for the Hamburg native, as it is for all top players, that he survives this first week,” said the eight-time Wimbledon champion. Federer added that he knows that Zverev “can play very well on grass.” Zverev defeated the Swiss in the semifinals of the grass tournament in Halle, Westphalia, in 2016.
The Hamburg native will play against Briton Cameron Norrie in the third round of Wimbledon this Saturday and would advance to the round of 16 with a win. The French Open finalist impressed with strong performances in the first two rounds and spoke of a changed attitude to grass tennis. For the first time, he sees himself as a real title contender in Wimbledon, said Zverev. He has not yet won a Grand Slam title.
