Missed tennis coup: Only Zverev left: Struff eliminated from Wimbledon

Alexander Zverev is the only remaining German tennis hopeful at Wimbledon. For Jan-Lennard Struff, the rain chaos ends with a defeat.

Tennis pro Jan-Lennard Struff must continue to wait for his first round of 16 at Wimbledon after a rain-related tie. The second-best German tennis pro lost the continuation of his two-day third-round match against Daniil Medvedev from Russia 1:6, 3:6, 6:4, 6:7 (3:7) in London.

“Mortgage” had a weak start

“I played really well today and the third set yesterday was also good. The first two were too much of a burden,” said Struff after his weak start to the match the day before: “That was simply bad of me.”

The match was interrupted on Friday afternoon due to rain and was not resumed. It was continued on Saturday with the score at 1:1 in the fourth set, but was interrupted again due to rain. In addition, the start of play on the uncovered courts had been delayed, so Struff had to exercise patience.

“It wasn’t that bad today. Things like that can happen here. I thought they managed the timing with the rain incredibly well.” Shortly after the break, it started pouring with rain. Numerous games were postponed or canceled for the day of the game because of the rain.

Struff not dissatisfied despite Wimbledon exit

For Struff, reaching the third round remains his best result at Wimbledon. After 2018 and 2019, the Warsteiner reached the third round for the third time. “You can lose against Medvedev, definitely. I would have liked to have improved my best result, but that’s not how it is. Still, a good tournament,” said Struff.

After his elimination, Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev is the last remaining participant. The French Open finalist reached the round of 16 with a three-set win against Briton Cameron Norrie.
