Tour de France: For 340,000 euros: Pogacar cycles with a luxury watch

In cycling, every gram of body weight is fought for. Tour leader Tadej Pogacar takes it easy; he even rides with a watch. It’s a ridiculously expensive model.

Tadej Pogacar wears the value of a single-family home on his wrist. The Tour de France dominator is a watch lover and is currently showing off a very special piece. The sponsor’s timepiece, appropriately fitted with a yellow strap, costs around 340,000 euros. It weighs just 32 grams and Pogacar’s friend, Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz, wears a similar version.

Prize money not enough to buy a watch

“I love watches. And the opportunity to wear the model during the Tour thanks to a sponsor is very nice for me,” said Pogacar. To put it into perspective: The good piece costs more than the second-place finisher (200,000 euros) and the third-place finisher (100,000 euros) receive in prize money after three weeks of hard work.

However, the overall leader of the Tour suggested that he did not buy the watch, but was only given it. The Slovenian also wears it during the stages, which is unusual in cycling, especially since it could break in the event of a fall.

Last year, Pogacar made headlines with his penchant for watches. However, the 25-year-old would have preferred to do without them. During the Paris-Nice race, thieves gained access to his room in the team hotel and stole a watch worth 165,000 euros. “I will never forget that moment,” said Pogacar.

Stolen watch never found again

The watch has not been found to this day, but the two men were sentenced to four years in prison. “The watch meant a lot to me. I find it amazing that they were able to sell the watch so quickly without a box or documents,” said Pogacar.

The two-time Tour winner has an emotional connection to his watches. The purchase price – if he had to pay it – would not deter him. The cycling star, who lives in Monaco, is said to receive six million euros a year from his UAE team.
