Is the water of the Seine too polluted to swim in? The results of the investigation recently raised hopes that the open water and triathlon competitions at the Olympic Games could take place in the river. On most days, the level of coliform bacteria was below the limits set by sports associations. To prove to the public that the Seine is clean enough, Mayor Anne Hidalgo jumped into the water together with the Games’ head of organization, Tony Estanguet.
Recently, the organizers’ worries have grown again. The weather and the above-average amount of water have caused the number of germs to rise again – and there is another problem: the flow rate has also been too high recently. At the moment, the Seine is carrying three times more water than usual due to the heavy rainfall. Despite the mayor’s PR campaign, it remains exciting to see whether the competitions will go ahead as planned – or whether a plan B will be put in place.
