With Lennard Kämna, a figurehead is leaving the German cycling team Red Bull. Staying was an option, but in the end there were different opinions.
A contract extension with Lennard Kämna at the German cycling team Red Bull failed due to differing views on the future. “The team gave me a lot and I was able to give the team a lot. But you also have to look at how my role is viewed and how other teams do it. Then the decision was made to change. It wasn’t easy for me, but I stand by it one hundred percent,” the Bremen native told the German Press Agency.
Where Kämna will move to after five years at Red Bull cannot be announced until after August 1st, but everything points to Lidl-Trek as the new employer. The decision to move was only made after his serious training accident at the beginning of April. At that time, Kämna had collided with a car in Tenerife and suffered several broken ribs, a bruised lung and a chest trauma.
Accident ends contract negotiations
Talks about a new contract were halted due to the fall. The 27-year-old has not revealed whether that is also a reason for his departure. “Ralph Denk (team boss, ed.) said that negotiations were put on hold after the accident. And if the rehab goes in the right direction, he intends to extend my contract with me. I’ll leave it at that for now,” said Kämna. According to dpa information, concrete negotiations never took place.
Before the Giro d’Italia, for which Kämna had prepared in Tenerife, the tour specialist was in top form and had once again pushed his performance limits. “My big long-term goal is to be in the overall ranking in one of the three big tours. At the moment, that’s a bit far away,” revealed Kämna. “My first big goal is to be in the Tour next year. It’s hard to say in what role right now; it was easier before the accident.”
