When a city hosts the Olympic Games, this often entails major construction work. Stadiums have to be built or rebuilt, as do halls, accommodation for athletes, media centers, and so on. This is also the case in Paris: During the Olympic Games in the French capital, the “Stade de France” becomes the Olympic Stadium. Beach volleyball is played next to the Eiffel Tower. Not far away, the BMX freestyle, 3×3 basketball, and skateboarding competitions take place – namely on the central Place de la Concorde.
Olympic sites are falling into disrepair in Athens, Rio and Sarajevo
Equestrian sports also have a famous historical backdrop. The competitions take place in the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, where the Sun King Louis XIV once resided. The most unusual competition location is another one, however. The surfing competitions are not taking place in Europe, but in Tahiti, in the overseas territory of French Polynesia, more than 15,700 kilometers as the crow flies from the actual venue of the Olympic Games.
In many places, however, the sports venues are no longer used after the games and fall into disrepair or are left to nature. Photos from Rio de Janeiro, Athens, Berlin, Atlanta, London and Sarajevo show what the former Olympic venues look like after the competitions and what they have become lost places.
