Marcelo Barovero, the goalkeeper from River’s golden era, retires

“Rag” Barovero it started in Atletico Rafaela and then went through Hurricane and Velez, but it was in River where he achieved maximum recognition and was part of the great history of the “millionaire” cast with the obtaining of several national and international titles from the hand of Marcelo Gallardo as a coach.

He began his career in the lower divisions of the Rafaela team, where he managed to develop his talent with gloves and reached the first team of the institution.

After his time at Vélez and Huracán, in 2012, he arrived at the Nuñez institution, which was in the process of reconstruction and which bet on Barovero be in charge of protecting the arch.

He was crowned champion of the 2015 Copa Libertadores and went to play in the final of the Club World Cup against Barcelona with the forward line made up of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar (MSN).

In 2018 he was sold to Club Necaxa of Mexico, and from there he moved to Monterrey, but he never achieved his goal of being transferred to European football.

Barovero decided to return to Argentina last year and chose Banfield, club where he will complete his retirement.

“Many years passed. Football put me in unique, unthinkable places and with the fortune of leaving unforgettable joys for the fans of each club (always alongside my most valuable teammates). You gave me much more than I dreamed of, I will never say that this was a sacrifice, it was just trying hard to do the job properly. My grandparents, my parents and my children saw me play.
