Kasper Hjulmand led the Danes to the semi-finals of the 2021 European Football Championship. After that, things went poorly. Now a change of personnel is supposed to bring a breath of fresh air.
Former Mainz coach Kasper Hjulmand is retiring as coach of the Danish national football team. In reviewing the European Championships in Germany, the 52-year-old came to the conclusion that the team needed new energy and that it was time for a new national coach, the Danish Football Association DBU announced.
His position will now be taken over by the current assistant coach Morten Wieghorst until the end of the year, while the association looks for a permanent solution until the 2026 World Cup.
“It has been an incredible honour and privilege to be the coach of our national team for four years,” Hjulmand was quoted as saying in an association statement. He gave it his all and can look back on a fantastic time with great support. With a view to the 2026 World Cup, he believes that a new face and new ideas are the best thing for the team.
New start as hope
Hjulmand took over the Danish men’s national team, including stars such as goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and midfield engine Christian Eriksen as well as numerous former and active Bundesliga players such as Thomas Delaney and Yussuf Poulsen, from Norwegian Åge Hareide in 2020.
At the 2021 European Championship, he led the Danes to the semi-finals. But then the team disappointed at the World Cup in Qatar. At the European Championship that just ended, however, the team again made it past the preliminary round, but was then eliminated in the round of 16 against Germany.
