The World Matchplay is the second most important darts tournament in the world. On Sunday evening there will be a duel between the two currently greatest players.
The two big favorites Luke Humphries and Michael van Gerwen have reached the final of the second most important darts tournament and will now face each other in a direct duel. At the World Matchplay in Blackpool, the English world champion Humphries clearly defeated his compatriot James Wade 17:10. In the subsequent duel between the two former world champions, the Dutchman van Gerwen prevailed against Michael Smith 17:13.
“I have to be better in the final, but I’m here and that’s all that matters,” said van Gerwen, who wants to win the tournament for the fourth time after 2015, 2016 and 2022. The former dominator is, however, the underdog against Primus Humphries. “Luke is a great player and he’s done really well recently, so I have to put him in his place first,” said “Mighty Mike,” as van Gerwen is known.
Humphries is in the final of the World Matchplay for the first time. With a win, he could extend his already comfortable lead in the world rankings. The final (9.15 p.m./DAZN) is one of the longest darts matches of the year. The winner has to win 18 legs. The German starters Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko were already eliminated in the first round.
