Angelique Kerber was the number 1 in the tennis world and more successful than any German player since Steffi Graf. After the Summer Games in Paris, it will now be over.
Angelique Kerber will end her glorious tennis career after the Olympic Games. The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner announced this decision via Instagram before the start of the Summer Games in Paris.
“Before the Olympics begin, I can already say that I will never forget Paris 2024 because it will be my last professional tournament as a tennis player,” wrote the 36-year-old: “And although this might actually be the right decision, it will never feel like it. Simply because I love the sport with all my heart and am grateful for the memories and opportunities it has given me.”
Kerber became a mother for the first time 17 months ago and was unable to repeat the great sporting successes she had at the peak of her career after her return. In 2016, she won the Australian Open and the US Open and became the first German world number one after Steffi Graf. Two years later, she triumphed at the grass court classic Wimbledon. The Kiel native is now the most successful German tennis player behind Graf. She also won Olympic silver at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Angelique Kerber’s comeback after pregnancy failed
At the end of February 2022, Kerber gave birth to her daughter Liana, and shortly before the turn of the year 2023 she made her comeback after maternity leave. She then failed in the first round at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon. After the sobering Wimbledon exit three weeks ago, she had left it open whether this would be her last appearance at the Grand Slam tournament in London. Now Kerber will celebrate her final farewell earlier than expected.

“Even as a child, I always watched the Olympic Games on television and imagined winning a medal myself, and I didn’t care what color the medal was,” Kerber said in an interview with Vogue magazine shortly before the start of the Olympics. “That’s why it’s a huge highlight for me personally to be in Paris this year. To soak up that special energy there.”
