Racism at Euro 2019: UEFA sanctions seven countries

The UEFA has punished the football federations of Austria, Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Romania and Serbia for racist and discriminatory acts committed by its fans during the Eurocup held in Germany.

Financial penalties vary between 20,000 and 50,000 euros, depending on the severity of the incidents.

According to a statement from UEFA’s control, ethics and discipline committee, in addition to the fines, the sanctions include: Bans on ticket sales to visiting fans for upcoming official matches at UEFA level.

However, this ban is suspended for a two-year probationary period and will be activated only if a similar violation is repeated within that time.

The Croatian Football Association (HNS) received the heaviest sanction with a fine of 50,000 euros for incidents caused by its fans during Croatia’s matches against Spain, Albania and Italy.

The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) will have to pay 40,000 euros for the discriminatory behaviour of its fans during Romania’s matches against Ukraine, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and Albania were fined 30,000 euros each for various incidents during their respective matches. Austria will have to pay 20,000 euros for a far-right banner displayed by its supporters during the match against Poland.

With these sanctions, UEFA aims to combat racism and discrimination in European football, ensuring that stadiums are safe and respectful spaces for all fans.
