In mid-July, Ralf Schumacher made his homosexuality public. He now spoke about the reactions in a podcast.
In a podcast, former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher expressed his delight at the reactions of racing drivers and team bosses from the premier class of motorsport to his coming out. “I have to say, I also found it nice to see how it worked in Formula 1, with a great deal of respect,” said the 49-year-old in the Sky podcast “Hardenacke meets …” at the weekend. “It was really nice to see,” Schumacher continued.
When asked if he had a message, he said: “This is purely selfishly about Etienne and me. That it is also clear and unambiguous who the partner at my side is so that I can live a normal life.”
Hamilton spoke out in favor of Schumacher
In mid-July, Schumacher appeared arm in arm with a man in an Instagram post and made his homosexuality public. The most beautiful thing in life is when you have the right partner by your side with whom you can share everything, wrote the brother of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher.
Praise was then given by, among others, British Formula 1 record world champion Lewis Hamilton and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso from Spain. Hamilton described Schumacher’s move to make his homosexuality public as a “positive message” for Formula 1. The racing driver, known for his fight for equality and diversity, also warned that the motorsport royal coffers still have to do much more. Alonso said: “It’s great that he feels good and we are happy for him.”
Schumacher used to be a successful racing driver himself. He started in 180 Formula 1 races, winning six of them. He later became involved in junior racing series as a team manager and also promoted the career of his son David. Ralf Schumacher was married to Cora Schumacher, but the couple have been separated for many years.
The former Formula 1 driver has been working regularly as a TV expert for the pay-TV channel Sky since 2019 and accompanies the premier class of motorsport on its world tour every year.
