Gauff committed seven double faults and had a low percentage of advantage on her serves, against an opponent who was solid on serve and committed fewer unforced errors.
Gauff argued with the match chair umpire over balls that went too close to the line and burst into tears before returning to play to finish the final two games of her third singles match in Paris with poor results.
The next player in the medal race is German Angelique Kerber, silver medalist in Rio 2016. The experienced player – who announced that the Games will be the last tournament of her career – beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez 6-4 and 6-3.
