Isabel Gose fulfilled a dream by winning bronze at the Olympics in Paris. And she proved that she can swim at the top even in a top field. Gose defeated a feared opponent.
Isabel Gose has emphasized the special significance of her Olympic bronze medal. “The international medals I have collected so far have always been medals where really strong girls were missing,” said the 22-year-old after finishing third in the 1500 meter freestyle. That’s why she had doubts before the race at the Paris Summer Games. “I was very excited and had a lot of respect and am just super happy that it all worked out.”
Gose had already won two bronze medals and one silver medal at the World Championships in February. However, several strong swimmers, such as the now eight-time Olympic champion Katie Ledecky, had decided not to take part in the title fights. This time, the entire world elite was at the start. “I am really proud that our hard work, the last training camps and the last weeks of training have paid off so well,” said Gose.
Gose had already lost out to the Italian Simona Quadarella several times in important races. This time she relegated the 25-year-old to fourth place. “It was a competition that I got to know well over the last season,” said Gose, happily noting: “I beat her in the right race.”
Gose knows that after her first Olympic medal, she will be in the spotlight even more in the future. The pressure will not diminish. “I have to be aware of that,” she said. “But I think that I took a very, very big step forward mentally today.”
