The Federal Minister of the Interior signs the basic agreement in Paris for a new attempt to host the Olympics in Germany. The Federal Government favors a bid for 2040.
The federal government has officially cleared the way for a German Olympic bid. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) signed the basic agreement in Paris with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the federal states and cities interested in bidding.
“We want a home game for our German athletes again. The federal government is united behind a new German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We want to take advantage of the great opportunities that the Olympic Games offer for our cohesion, for our economy and for sport,” said Faeser in Paris.
“A start has been made”
The DOSB had been trying to get the government’s backing for some time. “We are relieved and satisfied that the intensive discussions of the last few months at various levels have now paid off. The clear, cross-party commitment of the federal government and the chancellor to an application is an important and motivating signal both internally and externally,” said DOSB President Thomas Weikert. “This is a start.”
The Federal Cabinet had previously given the green light for political support for a new German attempt to host the Olympics. The Federal Government clearly prefers a bid for the 2040 Summer Games.
According to Weikert, this would be “a good option” 50 years after German reunification. Faeser confirmed that this would be “a strong symbol” and a “sign for democracy”. However, the DOSB can also imagine an application for 2036.
DOSB plans general meeting for 2025
Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and the Rhine-Ruhr region have expressed their interest in applying with letters of intent. The previous Olympic campaigns in Germany, however, failed due to resistance and the vote of the population in Munich and Hamburg. DOSB CEO Torsten Burmester therefore appealed: “A bid can only be successful if it is supported by large parts of the population.”
On December 7, the DOSB plans to decide on further steps at its general meeting in Saarbrücken. A German bid for the 2025 Olympic Games is to be launched. The federal government plans to contribute a total of 6.95 million euros to the bid costs by 2027.
