Olympics 2024: Chinese synchronized divers close to perfection

Impressive Olympic moment: In the women’s 10 meter synchronized final, the Chinese women Chen and Quan jump from the tower – and look like one person.

“Don’t synchronized diving actually require two people?” I’m just imagining a TV viewer who turns on the Olympic sports show on Wednesday and looks confused. Because at that very moment the Chinese women Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi are jumping from the 10-meter platform. Has the women’s individual platform diving been brought forward? It was actually only planned for August 5th!

In fact, Chen and Quan are so in sync that from some camera angles it looks like only one person is jumping. Even on second glance, you might think it’s a blurry image of a single person. One beer too many the night before? No, don’t worry. This really is women’s synchronized diving. You’ve really tuned in.

Well-deserved gold for Chen and Quan

The Chinese women were considered favorites before the competition. After their jump, everyone should know why. With 359.10 points, they won the gold medal – absolutely deserved, in my opinion as a layman. To be honest, I know nothing about the sport, but the Chinese women’s performance leaves me amazed. How does that happen? “You have to ask yourself how many hours these Chinese women practice every day,” writes one user on the news platform X. “I still wonder how that’s possible,” says another. They’re right.

I will not pursue a career in synchronized diving anymore, you have to be realistic about that. But Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi have sparked my interest in the sport. As I write these lines, I am looking at the Olympic schedule. I have to move on now, the men’s three-meter synchronized diving is about to start. The favorites there are – of course – from China.
