After the end at Olympia: “Into the deep end”: Laura Ludwig directly as co-commentator

Laura Ludwig is retiring from sports – but is staying true to her sport. She can imagine a job in television in the future.

Laura Ludwig spent the first day after her announced retirement as a beach volleyball player in the beach volleyball stadium. The 38-year-old was on ARD as a co-commentator around twelve hours after her career ended at the end of the season. “I was thrown in at the deep end, but it was a lot of fun. I enjoy things like that, of course, and they’re interesting too,” Ludwig told the German Press Agency in Paris afterwards.

The Rio Olympic champion commented on Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler’s victory in the round of 16 in the stadium at the Eiffel Tower. Before that, she had jokingly shaken hands with ARD presenter Alexander Bommes in the Olympic studio to sign an expert contract with the broadcaster. “It’s a job in itself, of course. You have to learn a lot. It’s definitely worth the experience. Let’s see if I get to commentate on one or two games,” said Ludwig.

She is saying goodbye after an extremely successful career. She took part in five Olympic Games. In 2016 she won gold in Rio de Janeiro with Kira Walkenhorst. A year later the two became world champions. After giving birth to two children, Ludwig fought her way to Paris together with the former world-class indoor player Louisa Lippmann. There the duo failed on Saturday after a disappointing preliminary round without a win. Together with Lippmann she wants to play in the European Championships, the German Championships and a tournament at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg, among other things, before she ends her career.
