Summer Games in Paris: Record-breaking Olympians: Wine for Werth and Fischer

Two German athletes have now won eight Olympic gold medals. This will be celebrated soon.

The only German athletes with eight Olympic gold medals will soon toast together. Dressage rider Isabell Werth wants to buy canoeist Birgit Fischer a glass of wine. “I’ve announced a glass of wine,” said Werth. “Birgit also likes to drink one.”

Werth became Germany’s record medalist at the Paris Games. Werth’s Olympic record now includes eight gold and six silver Olympic medals. Canoeist Birgit Fischer is Germany’s number two, having won eight Olympic gold medals and four silver medals in her career. If the term is interpreted strictly, both of them are now record Olympians. Only victories count for this.

It is clear “that we prefer to meet for dinner rather than coffee,” said Werth with a grin. “We have met before. It was very pleasant and funny,” reported the dressage rider. And she said of the canoeist, who has already ended her great career: “I have great respect for her and she is a great person.”

It has not been decided whether Werth will continue and compete again in Los Angeles in 2028. “I haven’t thought about that yet,” said the 55-year-old rider, who described Paris as a “turning point” three years ago. Her mare Wendy would be 14 years old and at the peak of her horse’s life in LA.
