Last big tournament: Boll and table tennis team easily in the Olympic quarter-finals

Timo Boll gets off to a successful start in his last major tournament. The German team easily makes it to the next round against Canada.

Table tennis star Timo Boll has had a successful start to his last Olympic Games, reaching the quarter-finals with the German men’s team. The 43-year-old won 3-0 against outsiders Canada in the first round in Paris with Dimitrij Ovtcharov and Dang Qiu. On Tuesday (8 p.m.) they will play against Sweden for a ticket to the semi-finals. The team’s goal is to win a medal again. At the last games in Tokyo three years ago, Germany won silver.

Dang and Boll won the doubles match against Eugene Wang and Jeremy Hazin 3-1 and only had brief problems in the second set. Ovtcharov also won 3-1 against Edward Ly, before Boll also won 3-0 against Wang with a flawless performance at the start of his seventh Olympic Games.

Boll did not compete in the Olympic singles

At the end of his great international career, former world number one Boll is fighting with his colleagues for the fifth consecutive team medal at the Olympics. In Beijing 2008 and Tokyo 2021 they won silver, in London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016 bronze. But the record European champion will not stop completely after the Olympics: he wants to play for his club Borussia Düsseldorf in the Bundesliga for one more season until his contract expires in 2025.

Boll had not previously competed in the individual event in France. His teammate Ovtcharov was the best German in this competition and was eliminated in the round of 16 the previous week. European champion Dang had already failed in the second round.
