Julian Weber cannot fulfill his big Olympic dream. The victory goes to a javelin thrower from Pakistan, who celebrates the Olympic record.
Javelin thrower Julian Weber did not win a medal at the Olympic Games in Paris. The 29-year-old from Mainz threw 87.40 meters and had to settle for sixth place. Gold went to World Championship runner-up Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan, whose javelin landed at the Olympic record distance of 92.97 meters.
Tokyo Olympic gold medalist and world champion Neeraj Chopra from India came second with 89.45 meters. Former world champion Anderson Peters from Grenada took bronze with 88.54 meters. Max Dehning from Leverkusen was eliminated in the qualification.
The German Athletics Association has so far won two silver medals in Saint-Denis – through decathlete Leo Neugebauer and long jumper Malaika Mihambo.
Medal contender Weber goes home empty-handed
Two months after the European Championship silver in Rome, when the Czech Jakub Vadlejch overtook him with his last attempt, Weber had mastered the qualification in Saint-Denis near Paris with ease with 87.76 meters. After fourth places at the Olympics three years ago and the following two World Championships, the 2022 European champion went into the final as a medal contender.
After a promising throw, Weber hurled the javelin a good 87 meters in his first attempt, but also crossed the throwing line. His competitors did better.
Nadeem shocks competition early
Nadeem shocked the competition in the second round with an Olympic record, Weber countered with 87.33 meters and moved up to third place, but immediately lost this position in the high-class competition.
Chopra also joined in with a throw of almost 90 meters, as did Kenyan Julius Yego, who came second at the 2016 Rio Olympics behind Thomas Röhler, and European champion Vadlejch. But no one could match Nadeem’s big throw – not even Weber, who tried everything.
