In an unprecedented achievement in its history, Morocco“The lions of the Atlas” won the medal bronze in it soccer of the Olympics of Paris 2024after defeating Egypt by 6-0.
The win marks the first time Morocco has won a medal in a discipline other than athletics or boxing, underlining the growth of football in the country.
Morocco had arrived at the Olympic Games with high expectations, backed by a strong performance in the qualifiers and the last World Cup held in Qatar, where it finished fourth and became the first African team to reach the semi-finals.
The team demonstrated its offensive capability and defensive solidity throughout the tournament.
In the group stage, they qualified with two wins against Argentina and Iraq and a loss to Ukraine. Then in the quarter-finals, they beat the United States 4-0 and in the semi-finals they fell to Spain 2-1 after starting the match with a lead.

The bronze medal match began with Morocco taking the lead thanks to a goal from Abde Ezzalzouli in the 23rd minute, followed quickly by Soufiane Rahimi three minutes later. With the score at 2-0 at half-time, they returned to the pitch to finish the story and Bilal El Khannouss scored the third goal in the 51st minute.
Rahimi scored his brace, Akram Nakach added the fifth and the experienced Achraf Hakimi completed the final tally.
This result is significant for Morocco, since It is the country’s first Olympic medal in a sport other than athletics or boxing..
The Moroccan National Olympic Committee (CNOM) has so far accumulated 25 medals in its Olympic history, all in these two disciplines. With this new medal, the total rises to 26, distributed as eight gold, five silver and thirteen bronze.
Men’s football at the Olympic Games will culminate this Friday, August 9 at 1:00 p.m. (Argentine time), with the final between the host France and Spain, which will seek to redeem itself from its defeat in the Tokyo 2020 final against Brazil.
