Who was Issa Hayatou, the short-lived FIFA boss and pioneer of African football?

The former Cameroonian leader has died aged 78. He held the top post at FIFA on an interim basis following Blatter’s departure.

The Cameroonian served as FIFA’s interim president for a short period between Blatter’s suspension and before Gianni Infantino’s election in February 2016.

Former Cameroonian leader of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Issa Hayatou, He died at the age of 78, his compatriot Samuel Eto’o announced on Friday.

The former FC Barcelona star, and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), described Hayatou as “the pioneer of modern football in Africa.”

Hayatou was CAF’s top official from 1998 to 2017, during which time the number of World Cup places allocated to African countries was increased from three to five.

Prior to CAF, Hayatou was president of Fecafoot from 1986 to 1988, then a member of the executive council of FIFA and the International Olympic Committee.

The Cameroonian served as FIFA’s interim president for a short period between Blatter’s suspension and before Gianni Infantino’s election in February 2016.

“CAF and African football will always be indebted to President Issa Hayatou for his immense contribution over the years to the development of football in Africa,” said current CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

“President Issa Hayatou has always been able, through his leadership, his dealings with people and his sense of pragmatism, to defend the voice of Africa. We owe him a lot,” Eto’o added.
