A Salzburg team in high spirits has also won the second game of the new Bundesliga season. In the first home game on Saturday, Pepijn Lijnders’ team beat Blau-Weiß Linz 5-1 (2-1), thus celebrating a successful dress rehearsal for Tuesday’s return match in the Champions League qualifiers against Twente Enschede. Man of the evening was Oscar Gloukh, who turned the game around after an early 0-1 deficit with three goals (15th, 34th, 62nd).

Blau-Weiß, a kind of “bogey team” of the favorites with a 1-0 win and a 1-1 draw last season, took the lead through Conor Noß (12th), but ultimately could do little to counter Salzburg’s unleashed offensive power. In the finish, starting eleven debutant Moussa Yeo (73rd) and Mads Bidstrup (77th) made the landslide victory perfect. After the 1-0 opening victory over Austria Vienna, Blau-Weiß suffered its first defeat.

Lijnders rested six regular players

Lijnders wanted “new energy sources” for the duel with the underdog. Half a dozen players were given the chance, and 18-year-old Bundesliga debutant John Mellberg was a real surprise as a left full-back.

As planned, Salzburg had more of the game in a fast-paced encounter and also had a few half-chances, but after twelve minutes they were reminded of the previous season. Noß took a high ball and shot at goal, got the better of Samson Baidoo and finished well into the far corner.
