After Olympic exit: Zverev beats Rune in Montreal quarterfinals

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev continues to be successful on the ATP tour despite his physical problems. He also wins his second appearance after his Olympic exit.

After the disappointment at the Olympic Games, tennis pro Alexander Zverev has reached the quarter-finals in Montreal, Canada. In his round of 16 match at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, the Hamburg native beat Danish top 20 player Holger Rune 6:3, 7:6 (7:5). The 27-year-old is now battling against American Sebastian Korda for a place in the semi-finals. Korda advanced without a fight against Norwegian Casper Ruud.

“I knew it wouldn’t be a nice match with such wind,” said Zverev, who had to cough during the interview: “I’m happy that I won.”

Zverev did not need to be at his best in the match against the inconsistent Rune, which was postponed by a day due to bad weather. With the break to make it 2-1, the world number four took the lead for the first time. He took the 21-year-old’s serve again to win the set.

Zverev needs six match points

In the second set, errors by Rune helped Zverev break to 5:3. But the gold medalist from Tokyo was unable to use his lead to win and immediately lost his own serve. At 6:5 and Rune serving, Zverev had the first two match points. In the tiebreak, the German number one made it through with the sixth match point after 1:43 hours.

At the Summer Games in France, Zverev was eliminated in the quarterfinals as a medal candidate. Due to physical problems, he had initially left his participation in Montreal open. He complained that he tired quickly and felt dizzy at a certain point, and reported that he could sometimes see four balls.

In Montreal, Zverev is seeded second behind the Italian world number one Jannik Sinner. The Serbian Olympic champion Novak Djokovic and the Spanish silver medalist Carlos Alcaraz decided not to compete.
