Olympic Games in Paris: German pentathlon coach Kim Raisner retires

In 2004, Kim Raisner finished fifth at the Olympics. After 19 years, the former top athlete stopped being the national coach for modern pentathlon.

Former modern pentathlete Kim Raisner is resigning as national coach. “I have resigned. I am resigning on September 30th,” said the 51-year-old Berliner at the end of the Olympic Games in Paris. She explained her decision by saying that there are things in the association that she doesn’t like. “The way things are, I don’t want that and I’ve drawn a line under it,” explained the fifth-place finisher at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

In the future, she will train young people in the Brandenburg regional association. Everything will be a little quieter, she can let everything sink in. “Maybe I can enjoy going on holiday for two or three weeks. Then I’ll watch it on TV and it’s not like I’m not into it with my heart. But at some point there might have to be a generational change,” said Raisner.

Raisner came into focus due to riding scandal in Tokyo

The 51-year-old has been national coach since 2005 and celebrated her greatest success with the Olympic victory of her protégé Lena Schöneborn in Beijing in 2008. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021, she came into focus because of the equestrian scandal surrounding Annika Zillekens. The athlete – then still known as Schleu – had desperately tried to get her refusing horse to keep riding by hitting it with a whip. Raisner had encouraged her to do so and, like Zillekens, had been reported for animal cruelty. The proceedings were dropped.

In Paris, Zillekens finished 15th after she was able to make it into the final at short notice following the withdrawal of Briton Kate French. The 34-year-old then confirmed that this was her last competition.
