According to media reports, the German Basketball Association has found a successor for Gordon Herbert. The supposed new national coach is an unknown quantity in Germany.
According to information from the “Hamburger Abendblatt” and the “Bild” newspaper, the Spaniard Álex Mumbrú is to become the new national basketball coach. The 45-year-old ex-professional would succeed successful coach Gordon Herbert, who moved to the German Bundesliga after the Olympic Games to join the double winners Bayern Munich.
This Thursday, the German Basketball Association (DBB) will present the new national coach at a press conference (12.30 p.m.). The association has not yet officially confirmed the appointment, and according to reports, details still need to be clarified. When asked, the DBB did not want to comment on the reports.
Mumbrú was only active as a professional in his home country and played for Real Madrid for several years. The winger won world and European championships with the Spanish national team and won the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Coaching experience at Spanish clubs
After the end of his active career, Mumbrú initially coached Bilbao Basket before moving to Euroleague club Valencia CF in 2022. His tenure there ended in April, partly because he and his team clearly missed the playoffs.
In the medium term, Mumbrú would now prepare the German national team for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Before that, there will be the European Championship in four countries next year with the final round in Riga and the World Championship in Qatar in 2027.
Mumbrú must form new squad
It remains to be seen who will play alongside captain Dennis Schröder in the coming years. Herbert had demanded a firm commitment from the players for three years. That expired with the Olympics. It is conceivable that players like Daniel Theis (32) and Niels Giffey (33) will end their careers in the national team.
The core of the current team is around 30 years old, so they could be there again in Los Angeles. It is quite possible that Franz Wagner (22), for example, will take a break next summer and then rejoin the team later.
The DBB has enough players with great potential at its disposal. Maximilian Kleber (32) and Isaiah Hartenstein (26) from the NBA were not even there under Herbert. There are other interesting players in Oscar (25) and Tristan da Silva (23), Justus Hollatz (23) and Kevin Yebo (28). In the future, the U18 team, which has just won the European Championship, also offers a lot of talent.
