Tour de France Femmes: Vollering loses yellow after fall – Lippert third in stage

On the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes, there was a mass crash around six kilometers from the finish – even the overall leader Demi Vollering was involved.

Liane Lippert narrowly missed the win on the fifth stage of the Tour de France Femmes. The 26-year-old German had to admit defeat in the sprint to the finish and came third. The 152.5-kilometer section from Bastogne in Belgium to Amnéville in France was overshadowed by a fall by the Dutch defending champion Demi Vollering, who lost the yellow jersey as a result.

The stage win went to Hungarian Blanka Kata Vas ahead of Polish rider Katarzyna Niewiadoma, who is now also the overall leader. Vollering has fallen back to ninth place and is 1:19 minutes behind. Lippert is in tenth place overall, 1:20 minutes behind.

The mass crash, in which Vollering was among those involved, occurred around six kilometers from the finish. The 27-year-old crossed the finish line in pain.

Lippert: Hectic finale

“It was a really, really hectic finale with a fall, which changed the whole thing completely,” Lippert said on ARD. She stressed that she had attacked a little too early in the sprint to the finish.

On Friday, the cyclists will head to the Jura. On the sixth stage, they will ride 159 kilometers from Remiremont to Morteau. The two mountain stages at the weekend with the final climb to Alpe d’Huez are the highlights of the tour.
