Hardly any German ex-footballer knows US football and California as well as Jürgen Klinsmann. Marco Reus probably thought so too – and asked the former national coach for advice before his move.
Before moving to the US Major League Soccer, former national soccer player Marco Reus sought advice from a real expert. “Jürgen Klinsmann lives here and told me a lot about the city and the club,” said Reus when he was introduced as a new signing for the Los Angeles Galaxy. The former national coach has lived south of the US metropolis in Huntington Beach for years and has also worked as the USA’s national coach.
For Reus, however, the club, where David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic once played, is the first foreign stop of his career. After twelve years at Borussia Dortmund, his contract expired in the summer.
Los Angeles is a different story than Dortmund
Reus got to know the dimensions and problems of Los Angeles in the first few days after his arrival. “I looked at a few houses. They weren’t actually far apart, but we still spent many hours in traffic jams,” said the 35-year-old.
“When I decided not to continue playing for Dortmund, I thought about what I could do. It was clear that I wanted to continue playing football,” said Reus. “My decision was not to continue playing in Germany or Europe. The first contact with Galaxy came in May.” In Germany, Reus played for Rot Weiss Ahlen, Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach. “I had a chance to do something else a few times, but I always stayed. That was the last chance to get to know a new culture in a new environment.”
Reus wants the championship
Record champion Galaxy is currently top of the Western Conference and is hoping for its first title since 2014. Reus wants to help them achieve this goal. “Now is our time. The team is ready,” he said. “I’m not the youngest anymore, but I want to help the youngest players get better. The little things are so important in football, how you prepare. Because the goal of this team is to win titles.”
