After Boca’s 1-0 home win over the Belo Horizonte team, Cruzeiro fans went viral with videos of Boca fans imitating a monkey and making racist gestures.
These images once again shocked Cruzeiro’s management, who issued a statement on the club’s social media condemning the events.
“Cruzeiro condemns the racist gestures and terms directed by Boca Juniors fans at Cruzeiro fans during the round of 16 match of the Sudamericana,” the club said.
“We need to put an end to this criminal movement with effective actions inside and outside the stadiums. Racism is a crime and a struggle for everyone,” concluded the Belo Horizonte club’s harsh statement.
This situation opens the possibility for CONMEBOL to take action on the matter, as it did in April when Boca was sanctioned for violating article 15.2 of the Disciplinary Code in the first leg of the semi-final against Palmeiras of Brazil for the 2023 Copa Libertadores.
The club from La Ribera was ordered to partially close the South Stand of the stadium during the match against Sportivo Trinidense in the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana, to display a flag condemning racism and to pay a fine of 100,000 dollars.
