On Sunday, the first Bundesliga team to be affected in the DFB Cup. As in the previous year, VfL Bochum was eliminated early. FC Augsburg also had a short struggle.
VfL Bochum is the first Bundesliga club to fail in the opening round of the DFB Cup. Almost twelve weeks after their spectacular rescue in the relegation round, the team of new coach Peter Zeigler was eliminated by second division club SSV Jahn Regensburg with a 0:1 (0:0) defeat. FC Augsburg did better a few hours earlier, winning 4:1 against fourth division club Viktoria Berlin after falling behind early on.
Overall, 12 of the 13 Bundesliga favorites have remained unscathed in their games since Friday and have moved into the second round, with the only team that is already out of the competition for the weak Bochum. Werder Bremen (at Energie Cottbus), VfL Wolfsburg (at TuS Koblenz) and Eintracht Frankfurt (at Eintracht Braunschweig) are still up for play on Monday. Because of the Supercup, runners-up VfB Stuttgart (at Preußen Münster) and double winners Bayer Leverkusen (at Carl Zeiss Jena) will only start the competition with a delay on August 27 and 28.
Rebound keeps SSV Jahn Regensburg in the DFB Cup
Regensburg’s central defender Florian Ballas scored the 1-0 lead in the 70th minute with a tap-in from a corner, which was well deserved at the time in front of 12,581 spectators in the home stadium. Just like in the previous season, when Bochum lost on penalties in Bielefeld, VfL did not make it past the first round.

Beer shower for the champion coach: Here former Vizekusen celebrates the title
In front of around 5,504 spectators in Berlin, Aidan Liu shot regional league team Viktoria into the lead against Augsburg in the fourth minute. Elvis Rexhbecaj (33rd minute), new signing Samuel Essende (53rd), substitute Niklas Dorsch (87th) and Phillip Tietz (90th+2) brought the favorites a win, which was a little too high. This meant that FCA avoided a first-round embarrassment like the one in Unterhaching last season.
Fortuna Düsseldorf fails against Dynamo Dresden
Fortuna Düsseldorf slipped up in the second division. The Rhinelanders suffered a surprise 0:2 (0:1) defeat at third division Dynamo Dresden. Christoph Daferner, who played for Fortuna in the second half of last season, put Dresden in the lead after 17 minutes. In front of 29,660 spectators, Robin Meißner scored the decisive goal (69th minute).
1. FC Nuremberg and its new coach Miroslav Klose knocked out last year’s DFB Cup horror 1. FC Saarbrücken. However, the club needed a penalty shootout against the third division team, which it won 5:3 after a 1:1 draw after extra time. Christian Mathenia saved the decisive shot from Saarbrücken’s captain Manuel Zeitz, who once played for FCN.
Hamburger SV and Hertha BSC win clearly
Bundesliga relegated team 1. FC Köln had to go into extra time against third division team SV Sandhausen. With a 3:2 (2:0, 2:2) win, coach Gerhard Struber’s team achieved their first competitive win of the season. After two unsuccessful attempts in the league, Mathias Olesen scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute and avoided a penalty shootout.
Hamburger SV beat SV Meppen 7:1 (2:0), Karlsruher SC beat Sportfreunde Lotte 5:0 (2:0). SV Elversberg had no problems with its 7:0 (3:0) win against VfV 06 Hildesheim, nor did SC Paderborn, which won 4:0 (1:0) against Bremer SV. After a close game at times, Hertha BSC finally made things clear and won 5:1 (1:0) against FC Hansa Rostock, who play in a lower league. SV Darmstadt made it to the next round with a 3:1 (2:0) win against FC Teutonia Ottensen.
