In the second half of the season and at the European Championships, Kimmich impressed as a right-back for FC Bayern and the national team. Coach Kompany, however, sees him back in midfield. Not everyone thinks that’s a good thing.
Football expert Dietmar Hamann does not understand why Joshua Kimmich appears to be playing in midfield again at FC Bayern Munich. “If he really should play there again, I would not understand it. There is Palhinha, who plays safely, and Pavlovic, who has just displaced Kimmich. Laimer also played a very good European Championship,” argued Hamann in an interview with “Sport Bild” before the start of the Bundesliga season. “I don’t see Kimmich in the six or eight position. He doesn’t have the speed or a trick in his repertoire to have an offensive influence. As a right-back, on the other hand, he was great.”
During the pre-season, Kimmich played in defensive midfield under new Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. In the second half of last season and under national coach Julian Nagelsmann, Kimmich was most recently deployed as a right-back.
Hamann praised FC Bayern’s new signings, but does not understand Matthijs de Ligt’s departure. “I was surprised that they sold de Ligt. He was a leader who made others around him better. Bayern also had the problem that they were in control in too few games. That won’t get better without him. I don’t know if we need a Tah now,” said the 50-year-old expert from the TV channel Sky.
