One of the events that changed the history of the media forever, who were the crazy people on the roof.
Every August 27th, Radio Broadcasting Day is celebrated in Argentina. This event was born in honor of the first radio broadcast in the world, carried out by “the crazy people on the roof” in our country in 1920.

On the night of August 27, from the terrace of the Coliseo Theater, four people who would go down in history added a speaker for the deaf to a microphone, and together with a 5-watt transmitter, made their dream come true. The transmission was successful, although only a few people in Buenos Aires who had the “crystal” headphones heard it.

The crazy people from the rooftop, pioneers of radio from Argentina to the world.
Who were the crazy people on the roof?
The crazy people on the roof was the name given to Enrique Telemachus Susini, Cesar Guerrico, Luis Romero Carranza and Miguel Mujica, who climbed onto the roof of the Coliseo Theater to carry out this first radio broadcast in history.
This name was given to them because of their tendency to travel around on rooftops to carry out their radio experiments. Susini’s voice was the first to break into the air. From the terrace of the Colosseum he presented the opera Parfisal, which was presented that evening under the direction of maestro Félix von Weingarten.
How was the first radio broadcast in Argentina?
“Ladies and gentlemen, today the Argentine Radio Society presents Richard Wagner’s Sacred Festival, ‘Parsifal’, with the performance of tenor Maestri, baritone Aldo Rossi Morelli and Argentine soprano Sara César, all with the orchestra of the Costanzi Theater in Rome, conducted by maestro Félix von Weingarten.”
These were the words that Enrique Susini said in his first radio broadcast. And although that statement was heard by less than 100 people, it would mark a milestone in the history of world radio and would change the lives of Argentines forever.
