By Nicanor Loreti, it tells a story based on the life of Alejandro Ortiz, who went from the ring to being a highway pirate. It stars boxer Sergio “Maravilla” Martínez alongside Moro Angheleri.

From one day to the next, as if it were bad, and on the contrary, it is good, solidly good, the film of Nicanor Loreti “Buffalo”that In 2022 it was one of the best, if not the best, of the National Section of the Mar del Plata international festival. It wasn’t released that year, nor the next, and now it’s being released all at once. Well, all at once is what this film is full of.

The plot may seem conventional, although it has its variations. A man is released from prison, his little son pays little attention to him, he wants to settle down and have an honest job but the money is not enough to live honestly.

People of bad living offer him two options, both dangerous. One goes wrong, the other remains. We are not going to tell the end, we will only say that, all in all, it is a happy ending. And that it is based on a true story, that of ““Buffalo” Alejandro Ortiz, former highway pirate, ex-convict, world kickboxing champion, currently devoted to music.

Be careful, we said that the film is based on the story of the Buffalo. We didn’t say that it transcribes it exactly. Cinema is cinema, but what appears on screen sounds real, is credible, and feels like it belongs to this land. It doesn’t matter that we’ve seen so many American B-class films with similar plots, it still feels like it belongs to us.

The director’s hand contributes to this feeling. Nicanor Loretihere also an editor, a man who knows how to make truly popular films, and the fists of the protagonist, the boxer, contribute especially Sergio “Maravilla” Martinezworld super welterweight and middleweight champion.

They accompany him Moro Angheleri, Oliver Kolker (soul of the tango comedy “I had the heart”still in theaters), Pasta Dioguardi, Pablo Pinto, Demian Salomon, Darío Levy. Art, photography, music and sound on point, as it should be. Perhaps someone could say that this film is just a bag of testosterone. However, the script was written by a woman, simple, petite, intelligent, Lourdes Prado Mendez, who also writes romance novels. In short, a film for all audiences.

A bonus: about the boxer’s career and his fight to get the Mexican mafia to recognize his title, Juan Pablo Cadaveira made an excellent documentary in 2014, “Wonderful. The movie”which should be replaced.
