Rebecca Cheptegei: Runner from Uganda dies after arson attack

Her partner is said to have poured petrol on Rebecca Cheptegei and set her on fire. The marathon runner from Uganda died a few days after the attack.

Four days after she was attacked and set on fire by her partner, Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has succumbed to her serious injuries. Cheptegei died after the “vicious attack” by her partner, said the President of the National Olympic Committee of Uganda, Donald Rukare, on Thursday in the online service X. He condemned the fatal attack on the athlete as a “cowardly and senseless act”.

According to police, Cheptegei’s partner doused the 33-year-old with petrol and set her on fire in her house in Kenya on Sunday. Just a few weeks earlier, the runner had finished 44th in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris.

According to doctors, Cheptegei suffered burns to 80 percent of her skin as a result of the attack. According to the hospital treating her, she died on Thursday night after multiple organ failure.

Death of Rebecca Cheptegei shocks Uganda

In response to Cheptegei’s death, the Uganda Athletics Federation condemned the case of domestic violence and called for the perpetrator to be held accountable. Kenya’s National Olympic Committee announced that it would work to “end gender-based violence” in the 33-year-old’s honor.

Violence against women is widespread in Kenya. According to official statistics, more than one in three women over the age of 15 has experienced physical violence.
