The cinema of mourning: Manuel Antín passed away

The recognized director of cinema Manuel Antin He died at the age of 98, reported the University of Cinema, of which he was rector.

“It is with deep sadness and great regret that the Universidad del Cine regrets to announce the passing of our beloved Rector Manuel Antín, who passed away at the age of 98.”

The letter confirmed the loss of the man who founded and directed the institution: “We say goodbye with deep sorrow to our mentor, accompanying his family and friends at this time.”

Antín, who had been hospitalized for several days, was recognized for making films such as “La cifra impar” or “Don Segundo Sombra.”

The master and reference of national cinema, also stood out as a screenwriter, producer, playwright and poet.

His work with Cortázar

An indispensable figure in the seventh art in our country, he made a film trilogy based on Julio Cortázar: La número impar, inspired by Cartas de mamá; Circe, based on the writer’s story of the same name; and Intimacy of the Parks based on the stories El idol de las Cícladas and Continuidad de los parques.

The joint work of Antín and Cortázar took place through correspondence between letters and audios sent by mail.

While the director managed pre-production in Argentina, the writer, already settled in France, sent his contributions to the construction process.

Cinema in the return to democracy

With an inexorable talent, he contributed his vision as a member of the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences of Argentina.

The teacher was a key figure in the return to democracy. In 1983 he achieved the first decree signed by former President Raúl Alfonsín dissolving the Cinematographic Qualification Entity, within the framework of his appointment as director of the National Institute of Cinematography (INC).

The decree not only made it possible to eliminate an anti-democratic state policy, but also provided filmmakers with a framework for freedom of expression and protection of their artistic work.
