Mujica will continue to feed himself through the gastrostomy that the doctors performed to avoid dehydration and at the same time avoid problems due to fibrosis in the esophagus that resulted after treatment in his fight against the cancer.

“A preparation can be administered there that is specially formulated to cover his nutritional needs. This has allowed him to tolerate it very well and has allowed him to improve his general condition,” explained his doctor. Raquel Pannone at a press conference, and then announced: “So much so that he has just been discharged.”

Thinking about him outpatient treatment, Pannone said there will be tests on “oral tolerance” and added: “When he can resume eating satisfactorily orally, the gastrostomy we performed will be removed.”

The recovery of Mujica

The health professional pointed out that during his nine-day hospitalization the process was “slowly recovering his condition because he is a 90-year-old patient with previous comorbidities” and clarified: “We could not be too anxious and rushed with the recovery, but we had to give him the time he needed to be safer.”

“This gastrostomy allows us safe access for food and hydration, “with a good flow and being able to allow the esophagus to repair itself naturally while this is going on. That is what we are aiming for: to have it better nourished, well hydrated and to give the esophagus time to complete the natural stages of recovery,” explained the doctor.

Although the former president confirmed that he is mobilizing in wheelchair for long trips, he anticipated that the objective is that he can recover a good part of his mobility and participate in activities progressively, so the reference of the MPP could be part of some campaign rally in the coming days.

“How long will this take? I can’t tell you how long it will take, but he is with desire and motivated. We will continue to support him in this evolution,” said Pannone.
