The German junior women’s team scored a 2-0 goal against the USA in injury time in the World Cup quarter-finals – but still missed out on a place in the semi-finals.
The German women’s soccer team missed out on the semi-finals of the U20 World Cup after a dramatic game with three goals in injury time. Coach Kathrin Peter’s team lost 1:3 to the USA on penalties. In Cali, the team gave up a 2:0 lead after conceding two very late goals – the USA scored in the eighth and ninth minutes of injury time.
Cora Zicai (61st minute) and Loreen Bender (90th+2) had previously scored the goals for Germany. In the penalty shootout, only Jella Veit scored for Germany. Germany and the USA are record world champions in the U20 junior women’s category with three titles each. “It’s all very bitter, the USA were the luckier team,” said Peter after the elimination.
“It’s an incredible shame that our U20 women were not rewarded for their good performances and passion,” said DFB sports director Nia Künzer. “A place in the top four would certainly have been another important step in their development.” Nevertheless, the tournament showed the potential these players have, stressed Künzer. “We can build on that, not least in the league.”
