The published video clearly shows the broken section of the tail of the vehicle developed by the company OceanGate, along with other fragments around it that were recovered at the request of the investigators of the caseThe debris was found at 500 meters from the bow of the Titanicwhich is located about 640 km off the coast of Newfoundland (Canada).

The hearing will last a total of two weeks and will seek to explain what went wrong with the device. It seeks to determine whether the incident was the result of Physical, human or capsule design failures which sank into the depths of the ocean.

The company’s former engineering director, Tony Nissenstated that during his tenure he was concerned about safety issues regarding the operation of the Titan submarine. In addition, Nissen stated that in 2019 he had submitted his concern about the ship’s hull, after which he was fired.

According to Nissen’s own statements, the company’s CEO, Stockton Rush – who died during the tragic incident – had ignored previous warnings about the vehicle’s safety.

The OceanGate submarine tragedy

OceanGate’s Titan submarine submerged in the North Atlantic Ocean on June 18, 2023. Its objective was to take 5 crew members to explore the remains of the Titanic, the famous ship sunk in 1912.

Just One hour and forty-five minutes later, communication with the submarine was lost.which led to an intense rescue operation. The operation was carried out against the clock, since the submarine only had a few dozen hours of oxygen autonomy.

Despite the efforts of rescuers, the June 22, 2023 The authorities declared the crew members dead after the estimated time of oxygen ran out and it was also confirmed that the remains found at the bottom of the ocean belonged to the submarine. The fatal victims were:

  • Stockton Rush – CEO of OceanGate and submarine pilot.
  • Hamish Harding – British businessman and explorer.
  • Paul-Henri Nargeolet – French expert diver.
  • Shahzada Dawood – Vice President of Engro Corporation.
  • Suleman Dawood – Son of Shahzada Dawood, 19 years old

The remains found at the bottom of the ocean confirmed that the vehicle suffered an implosion. In this line, the Rear Admiral John Mauger of the US Coast Guard said at a press conference: “The remains are compatible with a catastrophic implosion of the ship“.

The implosion would have occurred due to the enormous water pressure produced during the submersion of the submarine. This would have surpassed the resistance of the Titan’s hulldeforming its structure and ending the lives of the ship’s crew.
