The story of Juan Eduardo Hohberg, the footballer who claims to have been born three times
Juan Eduardo Hohberg used to say that he had been born three times. The first time, like any other person, when he came into the world. The second time, when his heart stopped during a match at the 1954 World Cup. And the third time, when he survived a plane crash.
Born in Rosario, Argentina, in 1927, Hohberg made his mark as a footballer in Uruguay, where he played for Peñarol. However, what marked his life and career was that semi-final match against Hungary in 1954, where he scored two vital goals for his team. After scoring the second goal to tie the match, Hohberg collapsed on the field due to a heart attack. His heart stopped beating for several minutes, but thanks to the quick intervention of the team’s masseurs, the striker was revived and miraculously returned to the match.
Years later, in 1958, the striker survived another extreme episode: a plane crash while returning from Portugal. The plane in which he was travelling with his family suffered a series of malfunctions that caused a forced landing on a Brazilian island. Against all odds, Hohberg, his wife and his son survived the tragedy.
