Mick Schumacher is hoping for Audi. The future Formula 1 factory team still has a regular cockpit available for 2025. But there is also competition from a promising Argentinian.
Mick Schumacher? Franco Colapinto? Or maybe another driver? The battle for the last free Formula 1 cockpit at Kick Sauber for 2025 has long since begun. “There will be a decision in September. So we have to wait and see what happens in these weeks,” said Mick Schumacher in the Singapore paddock to the TV station Sky when asked about the decision regarding the future Audi factory team.
The son of record world champion Michael Schumacher is keen to return to a regular cockpit in Formula 1. And the position alongside Nico Hülkenberg (37), who comes from the US team Haas, has not yet been filled for 2025.
Mick Schumacher on “Plan B”
Mick Schumacher does not want to think about a Plan B, at least not publicly. “I will deal with it when the time comes and Plan A does not work,” stressed the 25-year-old, who has been Mercedes’ substitute since 2023 and has also been active in Alpine’s endurance program since this year.
“Plan B must be in the back of my mind. I don’t know where that will go at the moment,” said Mick Schumacher, who had to vacate his seat for Hülkenberg at the end of 2022 after two years as a regular driver at Haas.
Colapinto deserves “a place in Formula 1”
Franco Colapinto is also a hot candidate for Kick Sauber. The Argentinian replaced the unsuccessful Logan Sargeant at Williams from the Italian Grand Prix in Monza and sensationally raced into the points in eighth place in his second Formula 1 race in Baku.
“He deserves a place in Formula 1,” said Williams team boss James Vowles about the 21-year-old driver from their own youth team. They are now waiting for “Audi or Sauber to come to us and say: What do you want? What are you interested in? And from there we can discuss what that means in concrete terms.”
Or maybe Bottas?
So Vowles would have nothing against a loan deal. “If I were in their position, I would take the time to see how Franco performs in the next two races, maybe even a little more, and then make a decision,” said Vowles to Kick Sauber.
Other candidates for second place in the future Audi racing team alongside Hülkenberg include current drivers Valtteri Bottas from Finland and Guanyu Zhou from China as well as McLaren junior Gabriel Bortoleto.
